- Cholesterol is needed to, keep the cells in your body healthy, produce important hormones, and also produce acids that help your body digest fat.
- From diet, cholesterol can only be ingested from animals we eat. Cholesterol does not come from plants.
- Not all cholesterol is bad for you. HDL (High-density lipoproteins) is good for you and actually helps remove the cholesterol that is bad for you, LDL (Low-density lipoprotein).
- Saturated fat (fat that is solid at room temperature) is the most harmful to your body and arteries. It increases your blood cholesterol level causing your body to produce more cholesterol than needed, thus clogging of the arteries can occur.
- Most cholesterol in the blood is produced from the liver. However, diets high in bad cholesterol are what contribute to high blood cholesterol in the body.
- Too much bad cholesterol over a certain period of time can cause heart disease (the number one killer in America), which is hardening of the arteries.
- Your total blood cholesterol should be less than 200 mg/dL., to be considered healthy.
- Not only can a diet affect the amount of cholesterol is your blood, your heredity can determine how much your body produces cholesterol. Many families have a history of high blood cholesterol levels.
- You can decrease blood cholesterol levels by eating more vegetables, more excerise, losing weight, and not smoking.
- You should not allow medications alone to take care of your cholesterol. Being physically active is important for many other factors as well.
