 1. Diverticulosis is when pouches, called diverticula, develop in a person colon or Large Intestines. They can form anywhere in the intestines, but most of the time they show up in the lowest part of the colon called the Sigmoid Colon

2. They sometimes can show up in a person who is 40 years old, but are likely to show up in individuals who are 60 or older. About 50% of older adults have a problem with diverticulosis.

3. People that have a low fiber diet are more prone to getting diverticulosis than individuals who have a diet high in fiber.

4. Some foods that will help prevent diverticulosis are leafy vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. Try to stay away from juices they lack the fiber you get from the actual vegetable and fruit.

5. Some of the symptoms that people have had are:

-Abdominal Pain (usually in the left lower abdomen)

-Rapid weight loss



6. Usually people don’t exhibit symptoms until they have diverticulitis (which is inflammation in the pouches)

7. Consuming large quantities of water daily will help prevent constipation, which Dr’s seem to think is a reason people get diverticulosis.

8. Exercising regularly is also something that you can do that will help prevent diverticulosis.

9. Many times diverticulosis goes unnoticed until the person goes to the Dr and test are done. The most common is a Colonoscopy (which is a test that allows Drs to see the inside of the colon)

10. If you cannot purchase fruits and vegetables, or just do not like them, you can get a fiber supplement such as Metamucil or Fibercon.
