  1. Indigestion is also known as dyspepsia
  2. Indigestion is a general term covering a variety of symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract
  3. Ingestion occurs when any part of the gastrointestinal tract functions abnormally
  4. Symptoms generally include pain in the upper abdomen, bloating, early fullness during a meal, and uncomfortable fullness after a meal
  5. Common causes related to lifestyle include eating too fast, overeating, excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, smoking, spicy foods, high-fat foods, nervousness, and pregnancy
  6. Certain medications can cause indigestion, such as aspirin, antibiotics, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  7. Diseases that can cause indigestion include peptic ulcers, pancreatitis, and occasionally cancer
  8. It is important to see you doctor if you have recurring symptoms of indigestion in order to rule out any underlying conditions.
  9. Functional dyspepsia is the term used when a cause for indigestion cannot be found
  10. If lifestyle changes fail to help your indigestion there are a number of over-the-counter drugs, as well as prescription medications that are available.
