 1.      Lactose is a large sugar molecule that is made up of two smaller sugars, glucose and galactose.

2.      Lactose must be split into glucose and galactose, in order to be absorbed from the small intestine and into the body.

3.      Lactase is the enzyme that is located on the surface of the cells lining the small intestine, which splits lactose into glucose and galactose

4.      Lactose intolerance is the incapability to digest lactose.

5.      Lactose intolerance occurs when the small intestine does not create sufficient amount of the enzyme lactase.

6.      Some of the symptoms that frequently occur after you eat or drink milk products include: diarrhea, nausea, weight loss, abdominal bloating, and cramps.

7.      Large doses of milk products may cause worse symptoms.

8.      Symptoms are often relieved by removing milk products from the diet.

9.      Ice cream, fermented milk products, buttermilk and cheeses are much easier to digest with lactose intolerance.

10.  Non-milk products that can substitute Calcium include: sardines, spinach, salmon, soy milk, orange, broccoli, lettuce greens, and tuna.

Glucose and galactose are then absorbed into the blood. Some people do not produce the enzyme lactase and therefore cannot break down lactose.
