Hi Everyone! Nurse Kimberly Here.
I wanted to share a little bit about myself and why I am on a mission to help moms, dads, and families get healthy. It was not too long ago that when I would step on the scale it would scream a frightening almost 230 pounds. Being overweight was not something that happened suddenly. In fact, I had struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. At certain points in my childhood my BMI was considered obese.
As I got into my teens and early twenties I was willing to try every fad diet if it would help me lose weight. There probably isn’t a commercialized diet out there between 1996 and 2002 that I didn’t try. It was always the same ugly routine. Each new diet I would try gave me hope that I finally had found the one that would help me get thin. But the results were always the same in the end. Sure I would lose weight but I would always gain it back and often even more.
When I got to college I was required to take a class called Anatomy and Physiology. Thank goodness the class was a requirement for my degree because both the class and professor changed my life forever. One component of the curriculum was an in depth lesson on nutrition. Professor Jay Snaric explained exactly how food is broken down in our bodies and then how our bodies use it. He also talked about what makes certain foods nutritious for our bodies and why other foods are not. It was literally like a light bulb went on inside my head. How did I go over twenty years not knowing the basics about everyday nutrition? Because most of my family was overweight and obese, I just assumed that I would always be struggling. But this information was new!
That is when my life took a new positive direction. I began applying the basic principles of nutrition I learned in class to how I ate. No special foods and no pills were involoved this time. My new eating habits, combined with exercise, helped me achieve my goal weight and keep it off. If I could have learned this information sooner it would have saved me so much wasted money on diet gimmicks and a whole lot of tears that were cried.
Because of my personal struggles with weight as a child and as an adult, I now feel passionately driven to help families get healthy. Some people just don’t know the basics and need help like I did.
Professor Jay and I are now dedicated to share our knowledge and devote our time to developing practical and helpful tools for busy moms, dads, and families everywhere. If I can lose over 90 pounds and change over 20 years of unhealthy habits, anyone can. If you are someone who has been struggling with learning how to eat healthy, don’t put it off any longer. Use the tools My Family Plate has to offer. It’s never too late to get healthy…..you just might need a little help and support along the way.
