Back to School For Moms: A Boot Camp Feel Good BURN!
By Nurse Kimberly Hickman

Not everyone has a professional gym close to home. And there are many people who cannot afford the monthly membership fees that most gyms have.  Some people wish they could take a stroll after work through their neighborhood but do not feel safe walking or jogging by busy streets. No worries, I have a solution for you.

Whether you are just starting to add exercise into your life, or if you have been at it for years this workout will be your new feel good burn! The best part, it’s free and there are no cars allowed. So where is your feel good burn going to take place? The answer: your local high school track.

A few years ago, when I first started to learn about different types of exercise, I tried out a local “boot camp”. The class was outdoors at a high school track and had been suggested to me by a fitness class instructor at my gym. The class was held at 5am! On my first visit, I felt a little nervous because I had no idea what to expect. The whole fitness thing was still new to me and I certainly did not consider myself an athlete. But, by the time the class was over I had discovered a new and exciting way to exercise and challenge my body. After the first class I couldn’t wait to attend the next. Don’t let my excitement be misleading. It was not an easy workout. But it made me feel strong and full of energy.

Once the spring session was over I began inventing my own high school track boot camp workouts. The different ways you can workout your body on a track, bleachers, and hills are endless. Some of the nurses I was working with at the time and other women in the community would join me for a track workout. People were losing weight, smiling, and spreading positive energy everywhere. It was contagious and so motivating.

These boot camp workouts are not new. In fact, most large communities have people who organize them on a regular basis. They are a fun way to workout. I try to squeeze one into my workout regimen every week if I can. You don’t have to go with a group or pay for a session to try out this workout. If you like to workout alone, which sometimes I do, you can go to your local high school track. Most of the public high schools I know have football fields with paved tracks and bleachers. This is why it is a feel good burn. Free, safe, and fun!

Below I am going to share with you one of the boot camp workout routines I first tried. If you are a novice to boot camp workouts then go at your own pace. You should never go full pace at something new because you could injure yourself. Please give me your feedback on the routine if you try it. Also, share your own creative exercise ideas that can be done at high school tracks. You can never have enough workout routines!

Nurse Kimberly’s Feel Good Burn Boot Camp Routine #1

Before you begin walk one lap around the track and then STRETCH!
Always stretch before you exercise. This is something that is key in preventing injury.

Now that you have stretched let the workout begin.

Lap #1 Walk one lap around the track at a brisk pace

Lap #2 Walk the long lengths of the track and jog the short ends

Lap #3 Steady jog the long lengths and walk the short ends

Lap #4 Jog the long lengths and sprint the short ends

Walk over to the bleachers.
Take a drink of water.

Bleachers:
If you are a beginner, climb the stairs in the bleachers from the bottom to the top at a brisk pace FOUR TIMES (4). If you are not a beginner sprint the bleachers stairs from bottom to top SIX (6) times.

Do 12 push-ups (knee assisted if needed)
Do 12 squat jumps
Do 12 crunches

Repeat the bleachers.

Do 12 push-ups (knee assisted if needed)
Do 12 squat jumps
Do 12 crunches

Repeat the bleachers.

Do 12 push-ups (knee assisted if needed)
Do 12 squat jumps
Do 12 crunches

Walk two laps around the track for a cool down.

Stretch, Smile, and DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!!! It is really hard to start working out. But stick with it! Once you get into a regular routine, you will look forward to it. Expect to experience some muscle fatique and soreness in the beginning. Your body will adapt to exercise and you will be able to do more as time goes on. No matter what you should be proud of yourself for investing time into your health.
If you like this let me know! I have a stack of them I would love to share.
