Using a Stability Ball by Dr. Randy

Using a stability ball during your workout is a great way to strengthen your core muscles and get a good workout all in the same amount of time.  Benefits of using a stability ball range from improved balance, improved posture, balance between your abdominal muscles and back muscles as well as just a stronger core.

Before you start using a stability ball in your workout there are a few things you need to know.  Make sure you get the right size ball for your height.  Don’t go by manufacturer guidelines; sit on the ball and make sure your hips are slightly higher than your knees.  If you are just starting out don’t use weights while on the ball.  Get use to balancing your body weight on the ball, it is still a good core workout with weight.

Stability balls are very versatile.  You can use the ball like a weight bench to add difficulty, do crunches, use it as a chair and do your flexibility training on it.  By putting your body on an unstable piece of equipment your core muscles contract to keep you from falling.  Because of that you can get a great core workout while doing your normal workout or you can work your core while sitting and watching television.

Most stability balls come with a workout poster that you can follow.  There are a lot of exercise DVDs or videos on certain websites.  Just make sure that you are taking the proper precautions when using the fitness ball.  Have plenty of space around you encase you fall off (which I have done) and be sure that you are starting off simple.
