Fight being Chained to Your Desk by Dr. Randy

Our bodies have evolved over time to do one thing – move.  But with current advances in technology the need to move has been greatly reduced. Think about it, we can do almost everything we need to do in a day from the seated position (as I type this I realize that I have been sitting in front of a screen, computer and TV, for almost 7 hours today).  We can shop, work, socialize, be entertained, and pay bills only with a few clicks of a mouse. You might say well I am getting the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity a day so I should be able to sit and do all of those things, and that is good.  But if you are getting your 30 minutes per day and sleep for 7 hours, what are you doing the other 16.5 hours in a day?

New research is showing that 30 minutes per day is not enough to counteract the negative effects of sitting so much during the day.  It is showing that the more you sit the earlier you die.  By sitting for extending periods the body slows the rate in which it burns calories mostly because the large muscles in the legs and back are not in use causing weight gain. Additionally the less you move during the day the greater the risk of feeling depressed, getting heart disease and becoming diabetic. Due to all of this sitting a new field of study, inactivity physiology, has emerged as well as “new” disease called the “sitting disease”. (Note: this is not a new disease, but rather specific behavior to follow that increases the risk for the diseases mentioned above and many more).

So, what can you do? Take a break every 10 minutes.  I am not saying you take a long break, just stand up, stretch, walk around – MOVE!!!  You can stand up and sit down 10 times, put the printer across the room, replace desk chairs with stability balls, take the stairs, park further away, take the long way to the copy / fax machine or bathroom.  It does not take much, the big thing is to make the change and move every 10-15 minutes so that you can avoid contracting the “sitting disease”.

Make the most of the day you are given.
